Nicola Hawley (left) and Sarah Fisher (right) are Education Officers at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. They are experienced Primary school teachers, having taught in the UK, overseas and both the state and private sectors. Nicola and Sarah work specifically with Primary-aged children and their teachers, designing and delivering workshops that are interactive and multisensory, focussing on cross-curricular and experiential learning.
Nicola and Sarah are also part of the Shakespeare Week team. Shakespeare Week is a national annual celebration giving Primary school children a great first encounter with nation’s most famous playwright. It was the winner of the best educational initiative in 2015 at the Museums and Heritage Awards. Nicola and Sarah are keen to share best practice for teaching Shakespeare in the Primary classroom.
2016 marks the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death and a celebration of 400 years of his creative and cultural legacy. For some, Shakespeare can be seen as inaccessible - many of us have memories of reading plays such as Hamlet or Henry V around the classroom, possibly with little effort being made to untangle the meaning behind the words or the context in which the plays were written. For many teenagers today, Shakespeare is a playwright you are taught only to be examined on.
